I'm interested to see whether the nintendo audience will engage with high-budget RPG games new to switch like elden ring and duskbloods, and if it'll be enough to lure ppl from other consoles. Exciting that Switch 2 will have enough processing power for these, but im worried nintendo will fall short in what seems like an attempt to compete w/ playstation (and xbox, but especially playstation) while neglecting to gift its base a new ride-or-die launch game (to your point about mario kart)
Interesting stuff as always, and I agree about MK often being a second title (and not having the wow factor of the bigger IPs)
The counter point (equally as a numbers chap) is that... well, try and get a Switch 2 pre-order. Whether it's Mario Kart, the buzz of a new Nintendo console or something else, the Switch 2 does certainly seem to have that early sales momentum. Breaking websites in the US, making headlines in Japan and just plain hard to get even here in the UK. Now, those early adopters aren't representative of course - and completely agree that the slate will need to be bulked out by Q4 (which it seems like it should be).
Me? Oh I'll be spending next Thursday playing Wind Waker with my Switch 2 GameCube controller..... but I am the definition of an outlier here.
I think the main selling point is the open world factor of Mario Kart World. That's something Nintendo has never done and they really don't take a lot of risks.
I agree having another game as the star release would be better. An Animal Crossing or even a remake of Ocarina of Time would move consoles.
I agree with the MKW skepticism. Maybe it moves consoles, but unless I'm mistaken, using a Mario Kart game as the crown jewel of a new console's launch game lineup is uncharted territory for Nintendo.
A new Mario, on the other hand? That would be a much safer bet. But seeing how they're yet to announce it, I kind of doubt we'll see it before 2026.
I get that Mario Kart might seem like a safe, even risky launch title. But Mario Kart World is a huge leap for the series. Open world, 24-player races, weather effects, rewind mechanics, it’s not just another Mario Kart. It’s ambitious and I think a really smart way to show off a lot of the different things the Switch 2 can do.
The newness of the open world makes it a standout in the series. I think it'll sell consoles but I feel another franchise like a new Mario or AC would move more.

I do agree. Can't help but feel we're missing a big single-player experience.
Maybe Mario Kart World can deliver on that front. Not long to find out.
